When using a proportional counter tube for the simultaneous measurement of Alpha and Beta radiation, one has to keep in mind that Alpha particles, due to their double positive charge and their 8000 times greater rest mass than Beta particles, will generate an ion avalanche which is greater by several orders of magnitude (specific ionization) in the vicinity of the counting wires; thus, Alpha particles create a much greater analog signal in the amplifier.
